The metallic glare of the first artificial satellite of the Earth, Vostok-1 rocket launch with Yuriy Gagarin onboard, the iconic spacewalk of a Soviet cosmonaut in outer space… More than a couple of dozen people stand behind these "star" achievement helping usto understand space better and making it closer to us. Moscow industrialists are among the soldiers of this invisible army. Just like a half-century ago, metropolitan enterprises produce rockets, space exploration equipment, cosmonauts' clothes, space food, and essential life support systems. The Space Mosprom themed train routes along Arbatsko-Pokrovskaya line from the wee hours to midnight. True to theme, the navy blue exterior of the train is all ablaze with catchy Space Mosprom letterings and space symbols – planets, satellites, stars and others. Interiors are decorated with vintage photographs telling the stories of the most prominent and bold events of the aerospace industry. There are ten cars in the branded train, each of them revealing one chapter of the space history: manned space missions, artificial satellites, exploration projects. The first car immerses its passengers in the history of the domestic aerospace industry, and the last car invites the passengers to look into the future showing the latest Russian invention, a drone named Orel. This reusable next generation ship is designed to transport humans and loads to space, for instance, to the Moon.
A special wagon of this train is devoted to Yuriy Gagarin.
Rare photographs from the legendary flight and pre-flight preparations are shown here, as well as surprising and little known facts about the people and industrial enterprises that turned a space flight from pipe dream into reality. For example, there were hundreds of devices responsible for the safety of a cosmonaut, and 300 of them had been manufactured on the Moscow-based Research and Production Association NPO Nauka, including the first life support system in the world, that could provide a human with oxygen, food and water for 12 man-days. It happened 60 years ago. Since then a lot of outstanding discoveries have been made. The Kvant enterprise invented and manufactured over 2 thousand solar batteries during years of operation. The batteries powered living Salut, International Space Station, and Mir stations, as well as the Venera, Mars and Fobos interplanetary spacecrafts. Technopolis Moscow Special Economic Zone resident companies have already patented over 100 inventions. The credit for the most inventions goes to the platforms located in Zelenograd, which have already been awarded the title of space microelectronics originators.
Moon exploration is one of the key story lines of the Space Mosprom exhibition. AO Angstrem, FGUP VIAM, VNIIEM corporation are Moscow enterprises play leading roles in this chapter.
A story about the Lunohod-2 moon trip is an impressive one among the Moon episodes. Back in 1942, this robot passed 42 kilometers above the surface of the natural satellite of the Earth. Its predecessor, Lunohod-1, managed to make 20,000 snapshots and send them to Earth. It was the first user of a Slow Scan TV technology (SSTV). The technology had been developed by Moscow enterprises, now all part of Russian Aerospace Systems Holding. The images were sent to Earth and re-created by electromechanical devices.
A whole car shows everyday life in Space, including pictures of clothes, space suits, customized food – all this is produced in Moscow. For example, Moscow Karat factory makes a space processed cheese. It is packed in aluminium cans to preserve its nutrients. Baking Industry R&D Institute is responsible for the cosmonauts' bread. Mini-loafs 4,5 grams each stay fresh for long time, do not get stale over time, and do not crumble, which is most important in zero-gravity environment.
